The question on everyone’s mind regarding the recent terror attacks in New York City and Philadelphia is whether we can afford to give up any of our liberties to improve security.
But what kind of freedoms should be sacrificed? Should we eliminate privacy laws or increase surveillance? How much freedom do we need to sacrifice to keep the country safe?
There are so many different options available when it comes to giving up liberties for security, and no two people have the same set of priorities. So what are some common red flags that indicate Americans may not be ready for greater levels of security?
As a general rule, Americans need more freedom than they do security because there’s nothing more terrifying than being unable to predict or control your future. Unfortunately, most Americans tend to want more security at the expense of their freedoms.
The best way for citizens to find the happy medium between these two competing values is by understanding how much freedom is necessary for each level of security.
What does too little security look like?
Too little security means that the government is unable to protect the nation from serious threats. It’s important to be able to predict the level of threat that’s coming your way to protect against it. In a country with too little security, an attack could have devastating consequences.
You could have an attack that kills or injures thousands of people. There’s also the risk of something as simple as an explosion or biological contamination. When too little security is present in a society, people have a significantly higher chance of suffering an accident or natural disaster.
It’s also important to note that an underprotected populace has a much higher chance of becoming victims of terrorism.
The average American should want more security.
There’s a lot of debate about whether America’s security level currently meets the average American’s standards. If we’re not at a high enough level of security, then we’re at risk of allowing ourselves to be overrun by serious threats.
If that were to happen, then it could mean that the government is unable to protect our family and friends from harm. What’s even more alarming is the risk that people might not realize how unsafe things are.
Many people are under the impression that the government is adequately protecting them and the nation as a whole. So these individuals have no idea that they could be in grave danger.
A lot of people think we need more than just “more” security.
There are a lot of people out there who think that we need a lot more security than we currently have. Often, this comes from the belief that the government isn’t doing enough to protect the country.
These people believe that the government’s current level of security is insufficient and that we need to increase it to a much higher level. These folks tend to think that the only way to achieve this is by increasing the amount of money allocated to the Pentagon.
New, stronger layers of security
New layers of security are a common response to an underprotected society. These layers of protection try to find a way to make everyday life more dangerous for potential threats. The idea is that if people are more scared, then they’re less likely to try to harm the country.
New layers of security might include more barriers between citizens and potential threats. There’s also the risk of attacking a critical infrastructure like the electric grid. This kind of attack could cause widespread damage and lead to a significant number of deaths.
